Flat Tire

On our way home from Doug's sinus surgery, we had the right rear tire blow out on the Expedition. We were "almost" at the intersection of Standridge and Hwy 121.

Luckily, my friend Linda has impeccable timing. She was calling to check on Doug and I asked her "Where are you?".

She said "I'm at Hwy 121 and the Tollway."

I said "Great! Can you do me a favor?"  I explained my situation and she was there in a flash. She loaded us up and delivered us to our door. I got Doug settled in and then called Jill for a favor.

I asked her if Josh could come and put the full size spare on the Expedition and drive the truck home.
Josh and Jill got the tire changed and truck delivered home...and I got a little extra play time with Andrew!

Two tires are on order from Discount Tire ($175 x 2 = $350).  They hopefully will be delivered to the store sometime this week, so that I can drive down to the Conroe area for Audrey's "Last Fling Before the Ring".

Thanks to Linda, Josh & Jill for being available and able to help me get everything taken care of so I could focus on other things!

Sinus Surgery

Wednesday, July 24th was the day of Doug's sinus surgery.
He had to not eat or drink anything after midnight on the 23rd.

He is shown here at about 6:30 am for his BEFORE photo.
This is Doug's first surgery in a hospital setting,
but he has had anesthesia for wisdom teeth removal.
So he was pretty ready to get this show on the road!
We were supposed to be checked in to the Surgery Center by 7:30am with
surgery scheduled at 8:30am.  The surgery, however, did not start until 9:22am.
Doug had great nurses that kept him calm.

Doug had a functional endoscopic sinus surgery to remove the polyps in all 6 of his sinus cavities.
He then had a nasal septoplasty, to correct his deviated septum and hole in his septum.
Nasal splints were placed to keep the nose straight. The splints will be removed in 7 days.

The surgery lasted until 10:37am when the doctor came out and told me everything went as planned and that Doug should be able to breathe much better now.

Doug would remain in the PACU for an hour before moving to a lower level of recovery.
Doug was given quite a bit of pain medication in surgery and the first recovery room so had a little difficulty waking up.  He would spend the next two hours in this recovery room.

He did have a little nausea, but was given Zofran for that and he was able to walk around the unit.

Post surgery, has gone better than I expected. The nose is painful but he only needed strong pain medication for the first 24 hours, and has been on Tylenol since then.
He has had a little bit of a cold during this...this is not cool - when you can't blow your nose.

Wednesday, July 31st is his follow-up appt and he will have the nasal splints removed.
He is already noticing he can smell things he hadn't smelled before so that is good.
Thanks for all the calls and emails checking on him.

Andrew's visit

Josh and Jill went out of town for a few days and we got to keep Andrew for a few short days.
I picked him up from daycare on Thursday afternoon.

Dinner - Thursday night was a Manwich sandwich, mac & cheese and 1/2 peach cut up.

He is shown eating his dinner like a big boy

I also bought a potty chair that fits the toilet for him to start using.
He always ran right to it when I asked him "Do you want to sit on the potty?"
He never was successful...but we'll keep trying!

Friday at lunchtime we went to visit Grandpa at work.
"Look how skinny Poppa is getting!"

He slept on the way all the way home!

Saturday, Grandpa had to work most of the day.
Andrew is shown enjoying some special treats from Mimi!
Sunday, we went to the Mall and the grocery store.
Josh, Jill and Brycelynn picked up Andrew after dinner Sunday night.

We had a wonderful visit and taught Andrew some new sounds to make (elephants, kitty, and chickens). We really enjoyed hearing his vocabulary grow and loved reading lots and lots of book!

Ground Hornets

Our yard has become plaqued with Ground Hornets (Cicada Killers).

Ground-digger wasps (GDWs) are very large (slightly larger than a green hornet) passive-aggressive wasps that "build" their nests in dry, unfertilized earth. They are typically large and black-bodied with yellow stripes on their back-end. When fully grown, they measure about one and a half inches (or more) in length with about a one and a quarter-inch wide wing span.

This one of the nests found in our back yard. There are many of them around the yard!!!

This is what they look like...very large...a member of the wasp family.
I've been hearing lots of cicadas everynight...so these ground hornets re not doing their job.

We've tried some Spectracide Ground Hornet foam directly info the holes (at dusk when they are supposed to be in their nests) But they continue to disturb our quiet afternoons in the pool and our tranquil evenings on the patio.  Hopefully we can get through this summer without a sting!

More healthy eating

Doug and I are both continuing our weight loss journey.
I have lost 17 pounds and he has lost 18 pounds.
We are doing well with portion control and no processed food.

Tonights menu was a pork chop, cantaloupe and a grilled tomato.

Grandma's Helper

If Andrew comes over to our house and the vaccuum cleaner is out,
he is not happy unless we can vaccuum together.
He is not strong enough to do it by himself yet..but it won't be long!

Showing him where "the things" on the carpet are that we will vaccuum up.
Grandma's Little Helper!
